Sugar Detox: End Results

I’ve been eating a paleo diet for some time now, but sugars had slowly crept back into my diet in the form of gummi bears and paleo treats.
So, three weeks ago I started a 21 day sugar detox program. I have to admit, it was tough going for a while.
The first week was okay, but I wanted M&M’s like crazy. I wanted to taste the honey in my coffee. I wanted ice cream.
But I stuck with it and made it through. By the end of the first week I was doing fairly well. No slips and cravings were diminishing.
The second week was good. As a crossfit ‘athlete’, I decided to add a sweet potato back into rotation every few days in the morning after my workout. That felt about right; I had more energy throughout the day.
By the end of the week, I felt like I could do this forever. I was finding new ways of making meat and vegetables taste wonderful.
The third week was great, as I had gotten into the groove of what I would and would not eat. The cupcakes at a meeting on Tuesday were no big deal. (I think it was tougher on everyone else to see me not eating them than it was for me).
Coming Off the Detox
I decided to come off the detox a few days early, in order to enjoy the Cinco de Mayo festivities. So for my first real carb hit after 19 days, I had some corn tortillas fried in coconut oil. They tasted SO good.
Yeah, that’s it. I could have had anything, but I just had some corn tortillas, along with ground beef and avocado.
The result? A few hours later I felt bloated and gassy.
Was it worth it? Yes. But probably not in the way that you are thinking. I am glad that I cleared out my system so that I could see what the carbs and sugars were doing to me.
- I don’t have any pictures, but I lost a few pounds and I feel a bit more ripped.
- I definately enjoy the food and discipline of eating that way, so I think I’ll stay on the lowerish carb side of things
- I feel like I can go without food for a time without getting cranky like I used to do.
- I would recommend this to anyone who feels like it’s time for a change. It’s short enough to be doable, but long enough to be effective.
It’s great to be free from sugar dependance.
